丸亀城には築城にまつわる悲しい伝説が二つあります。
その一つは、石垣の建設責任者であった工事現場の棟梁の羽坂重三郎が、工事完成の後、機密漏洩を恐れられ葬り去られるという伝説であり、もう一つは、これも築城完成後の度重なる崩落を防ぐための人柱伝説です。
羽坂重三郎と二の丸の井戸の伝説
石垣の石工棟梁の名前は羽坂重三郎といいました。
Name of the top leader of stone wall workers was Hasaka Juzaburo.
彼は仕事中はいつも上半身裸体でしたので、「裸の重三」とも呼ばれていました。
He was called "Hadaka-no-Juza" because he worked usually in naked
his upper-body.
石垣が完成した時、城主が家来全員を集めてこの石垣の頂上まで登れるものはいるかと尋ねました。
When he completed the stone wall, his majesty Load of this Castle asked
all the subordinates if anyone could climb up the stone wall to the top.
誰も答えるものがなかったので重三郎に「お前ならできるだろう」というと重三郎は「はい」と答えて簡単にやってのけました。
No one couldn't answer, and he said to Juzaburo "You can do it"
and Juzaburo answered "Yes", and easily succeeded.
家来たちは拍手喝さいを送りました。しかし、これが彼の悲劇の始まりでした。そのときの彼には知る由もなかったのです。
All the subordinates sent him big hands. But this was just begining of
his tradedy, he could not know that at that time.
城主は重三は危険だと思いました。彼は石垣の重要秘密をたくさん知っているので、もし彼が裏切って敵に寝返ったら大変なことになると心配しました。
His majesty thought Juza was dangerous. He has much important secret about
stone wall, and worried if Juza might betray and go for the enemy, it would
be a critical fate.
ある日、城主は重三に井戸の内側を点検するよう命じて、仕事中の重三の上から大きな石を落としました。
One day, he ordered Juza to inspect the inside wall of the well, and dropped
a big stone on Juza working.

人柱伝説
城の石垣が完成した後で石垣の一部が何回も崩れました。
After completing stone wall of the Castle, some parts of stone walls fell
down many times.
石垣の製作者と城主はこの問題を解決するにはどうすればよいかを考えました。
Stone wall makers and Majesty thought what to do to resolve the problem.
石垣を強化して二度と崩れないようにする最終案は城に生けにえをささげるというものでした。
The final idea to keep strong stone wall and not to fall down again was
offering sacrifice to the Castle.
彼らは城のどこかに誰かを生き埋めにしようと決定しました。
They decided to bury some one alive under the earth somewhere in the Castle.
しかし、「誰が」その生き埋めにするのにふさわしいのかが大問題でした。
But big problem was who was "some one" such suitable person to
be buried.
彼らが早朝、お城周辺を生き埋めの対象となる適当な人物を探していた時、ついに一生懸命働いている石屋と「豆腐ー豆腐ー」と叫びながら歩いている豆腐屋を見つけました。
When they were looking for some one suitable to be buried in the early
morning around Castle, at last, they found a stone-worker working very
hard and a tofu-seller warking and shouting "tofu-tofu".
そしてこの二人がお城強化の犠牲者となったのです。
These two persons became sacrifice to the Castle keeping strong.
しかし、お城のお堀端に雨が降る朝はいつも「トーフートーフー」という声と「カチンカチン」という音が聞こえるそうです。
But in every rainy morning arround the Castle moat, people hear sad voice
"tofu-tofu" and sound "kachin-kachin".
